Murky Coffee in Eastern Market had signs up today saying the business had been seized. Uncool.

A lot of fuss been made over Charles Bock’s Vegas-based literary debut Beautiful Children– most of it by the NYT, which variably over-hyped then under-loved it. Have to say I side with Maslin on this one; BC is nothing if not ambitious, but it’s all gamble and no payoff.
Read the first chapter at (where else?) the NY Times, or download a PDF of the novel for free (!) from Amazon for a limited time.

Can you imagine a world without the sleek nose hair trimmers and ‘ionic breeze’ air-filters you’ve grown to rely upon? I sure can’t. That’s why Sharper Image’s bankruptcy comes as a complete shock to me. What does the loss of this ’90s institution really mean? Are Americans finally fed up with overpriced crap electronics? Is this a recession? The coming of the post-post-industrial economy? Whatever the case, I know that Sharper Image and all it’s strangely comforting crap will be sorely missed by this blogster.

Mayor Adrian Fenty’s designs for a DC quarter (to be minted in 2009) were rejected because they included the phrase “Taxation Without Representation.” The U.S. Mint called the slogan “too political.”
Well, there’s always this option. (Yes, that’s a dirty quarter featuring Bill Clinton with his pants down. Yes, it costs $4.95. No, it is not legal tender.)
Okay, considering the consistency and creativity of Michel Gondry’s body of work, I feel pretty confident that he didn’t get the idea for his new film Be Kind Rewind from a sketch comedy show starring Amanda Bynes that ran on Nickelodeon a few years ago. But there are some eerie similarities in the film’s setup and “Blockblister,” a recurring sketch from The Amanda Show. (Meta Bonus: If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the “sweded” version of the Be Kind trailer that Gondry did all by himself. Choice!)

So I myself cannot take partake of such delights, but it seems like everyone I work with RAVES about this place. Tuesday night happy hour 5-9: 1/2 price martinis and 2 for 1 bottled beer. Someone should take advantage.
