Oh, you silly Eastern Europeans. Why can’t you appreciate the good films that come out of Hollywood (few though they may be), instead of latching onto the mindless drivel that even us Uh-murr-icans are embarrassed of? Jessica Simpson’s rom-com megaflop Blonde Ambition, which only screened in EIGHT theaters in Texas before being quietly dumped to DVD, actually managed to top the Ukranian box office in its opening weekend. In an interview with People magazine, Box Office Mojo editor in chief Conor Bresnan explained the sad truth thusly: “Russian and Ukrainian audiences have an even bigger urge for escapism than Americans. So, films like Blonde Ambition will gross more than No Country for Old Men.” Bad news for our country’s self-esteem on the international cinema front, but this should give Simpson high hopes for Major Movie Star (oh the irony of that title), her upcoming thinly-veiled remake of Private Benjamin.
