The official story is that Heatherwick Studios designed this bamboo-spined/ LED-tipped structure for the UK Pavillion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo. The hovering “cilia” will move in the wind, giving the viewer a 3-D show of LED images, or a good old-fashioned grand mal seizure.  You can read the detailed publicity here, but likely its true purpose will become clear in 2012. Either this Englishman is part of a thinly veiled Mayan conspiracy or just watched this too many times on cable. (ID)

So Sex and the City opens today. Ya heard? In honor of the occasion, and because I always thought SJP looked best behind the glow of her Mac, I thought I’d eschew gabbing about Big or Choo, Cosmos or cocks, and Jules or Mimi in favor of revisiting some moments of Carrie at her most writerly. Herewith, sex and the literary: Continue reading

YES: T.I. to star in new reality series by rachels

Following the unholy tradition of superb, mindless MTV reality television is a new series to feature T.I. as he navigates the ups and downs of a 1,000-hour community service sentence. The show is set to air after the rapper starts serving his one year in prison for illegally purchasing machine guns, etc. in his hometown of Atlanta. (Pitchfork)

Wondering what else is up in T.I.’s life? So was I. While T.I. was under house arrest he wrote and recorded the upcoming Paper Trail, titled so because the artist took the time to write lyrics down on paper. House arrest will do that to you. In stores August 12.

And, finally, T.I. kicks off his final tour before prison at Love right here in DC of all places on June 6. (Slick Rick follows on June 13, just had to throw that out there.)

Yes/No: David Gordon Green Pt. 3 by btfaust

Well, somehow I’ve found myself with yet another posting on the world of filmmaker David Gordon Green. Today the LA Times profiles actor Danny McBride. DGG cast his fellow classmate in All The Real Girls and he was hilarious. Now he’s been drafted by the Will Ferrell/Judd Apatow big league. In fact, he has been so invested in as the next big thing that he got Mr. Green the directing gig on Pineapple Express and he has a part in this Land of the Lost behemoth.

Also in the LAT today, one of the most depressing stories I’ve ever encountered.

DC – Drama City: A Small Addiction by mnjones

I have a really embarrassing addiction. It started two years ago, but it’s only now that I’m able to admit that I’m no longer in control. It started innocently enough; at first it was a general, disinterested perusal, but it has progressed to a full blown preoccupation. I was of discerning taste, and had little interest in the lives of sports players, reality TV stars, or tween queens. I came onto the celebrity gossip scene at the height of baby hype. By the end of the summer of ’06 I was convinced that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had adopted a baby and hidden the child away until they could alter him/her to look it/her. Then the baby pictures came out and I happened upon a little gem entitled The Celebrity Baby Blog. Continue reading

As we all know, Baltimore can get low down and gritty. Seems to me like the perfect Mid-Atlantic city to harbor a gutter rock band like Hollywood. “Hits! An Alltime Low” is Hollywood’s first full length CD/LP release available via Big Neck Records. If you’re super into post-blah, blog core, or happen to be super PC stay far away from this shit cuz you just can’t handle it. P.S. No one really likes hanging with you.

NO: The Hills in Washington, DC by mnjones

So, reports are circulating that MTV is developing an East Coast version of The Hills to be set in DC.  While I disagree with the idiots typing about the ugly people/lack of drama/lack of money to be found in the DC area, I dislike the idea of living in a city that attracted MTV program development. I just hope they avoid the over use of stereotypical DC landmarks (LC 2 breaks up in front of the White House, Heidi 2 gets drunk and vomits in the reflecting pool, Audrina 2 poses nude on top of the Washington Monument). Just keep all the drama confined to Georgetown where it belongs…

Zulu Pearls are gracing the Black Cat with their presence Saturday. ZP will be opening the show up for some other groups, namely Brian Scary and The Shredding Tears and Exit Clov... It’s gonna get sugary and 70’s as fuck. I will say that these shredding tears do shred on a guitar. If you’re into that then you better stick around. But obviously get there early for cher boyz. I would recommend 8:30 if you’re down for the cause.

The Futureheadsthird LP comes out in the UK next Monday and in the US on June 3rd. You can listen to the record in its entirety here for the price of your name/e-mail. So worth it, and so worth sticking it to 679, who dropped the band in ’06 after they dared to make a really fucking awesome (if slightly less frenetic) follow-up to their self-titled debut. Swoon for “Radio Heart” after the jump.
