Aside from unfortunate theme songs and awful mascots EURO 2008 has incredibly lived up to the hype of a major tournament. Tonight we bid farewell to a Turkey team that was without doubt the most entertaining and inspiring of the last three weeks. Turkey seemed to be fueled on heart and pride alone, as they fought their way into the semi-final after three consecutive late wins against the Swiss, Czechs and the Croatians, but unfortunately couldn’t make it happen tonight in Basel.

I couldn’t find any decent highlight clips for you but feel free to sort through the hundreds of trashy clips made by weird Turkish teenagers on You Tube. On the winning side of things, Germany advances to their 6th EURO Finals appearance; the most of any team in Europe. They will face either Spain or Russia on Sunday. That game is being broadcast live tomorrow on ESPN at 2:45 PM.

Turks make up the largest minority in Germany and if you’re into good cinema or German-Turkish relations you can check out Fatih Akin’s latest film Auf Der Anderen Seite (This Side of Heaven) this week at E Street Landmark Theatre. I did and it was good. I also recommend you check out Head On (Gegen die Wand) if you want to see Akin’s breakthrough. I liked it so much that I own it. Here’s a trailer (sorry the subtitles are in French):
