Well, we just got through the spectacle that was the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and we already have, (as I suspected) our first bummer story. Apparently a Chinese man attacked two American tourists at the Drum Tower in Beijing and managed to kill one of them. He then threw himself from the building and died. No medals. Just shitty news.

Anyone else wanna place a bet one what the next controversial story/tragedy will be?

Virginia Sen. Jim Webb took himself out of the running to be Obama’s Vice President, telling the press today, “”Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for Vice President.”

Many had hoped an Obama/Webb ticket would help Virginia go blue in November. As previously written, VA Governor Tim Kaine is still on the short list.

Senator Warner?

Former Governor Mark Warner will not be Obama’s VP, but he will be running for the US Senate in Virginia. Although Warner has graciously removed himself from the pool potential Obama running-mates, current Governor Tim Kaine and Senator Jim Webb are still in the mix. VA dems can be proud that their unique brand of politics is getting noticed by the whole country, and that the state may finally be considered a swing state in the upcoming general election.

Kaine and Webb are politically diverse from Obama and his core supporters (Kaine is pro-life, Webb served as Reagan’s Navy secretary), but this may be just the kind of “gap-filling” he needs to seal the deal.
